2024 Vegas Dance Explosion Line Dance Choreography Competition Rules
PURPOSE: To give aspiring choreographers an opportunity to showcase their dances and earn a spot as a Choreographer/Instructor at the 2024 Vegas Dance Explosion.
WHEN: The choreography competition will take place in separate heats on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
TIMELINES:
- Contestants must have their step sheets submitted by October 25, 2024. (However, when registering for Choreography Competition you must indicate which division(s) you desire to enter. Although your step sheet(s) for your entry is not due until 10/25/24 you cannot change the Division(s) in which you have registered)
- All dance entries must have been choreographed between October 25, 2023 and October 25, 2024.
- Days and times of the divisions and specific heat assignments will be announced after Nov 1, 2024.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Competitors must not have won first place at VDE or other choreography competitions, or have been compensated as a visiting choreographer teacher at a line dance event.
- Only one dance per choreographer (includes dances choreographed by multiple choreographers) may be entered in each division.
- Entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, depending on available slots.
- All Competitors must be registered with a Platinum or Gold Pass for the 2024 Vegas Dance Explosion
ENTRANCE PROCEDURES:
- Complete the 2024 VDE Line Dance Choreography Competition Form
- Fee: $25 per division entered, payable upon registration.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS: The winners will be announced during the Saturday Evening program where the winning dances will be showcased.
DIVISIONS:
Division 1 = Beginner
Dances should be appropriate for new or less-experienced dancers and have no variation (Restart, Tag, Bridge, A,B Pattern) to the sequence of dance steps.
Division 2 = Intermediate-Advanced: Non-Phrased
Dances should be appropriate for improver and higher-level dancers and have no variation (Restart, Tag, Bridge, A,B Pattern) to the sequence of dance steps.
Division 3 = Intermediate-Advanced: Phrased
Dances should be appropriate for improver and higher-level dancers and have any of the following variations to the sequence of dance steps: Restart, Tag, Bridge, A,B Pattern
DAY OF COMPETITION:
- Have your music on a data stick
- Bring 6 copies of step sheets
- Dress appropriately as you would if you were a member of the VDE Instructor staff
COMPETITION DETAILS:
All dances entered in each category will be taught during a 10-15 minute workshop setting to a panel of judges. The original choreographer will demonstrate no more than four patterns of their dance. The choreographer will then teach (walk through) the dance to the panel of judges who will come out onto the dance floor to learn the dance. In the case of multiple choreographers, the eligible prize recipient will be whoever teaches the dance during the competition. Only one choreographer needs to be present.
Divisions with 8 or more entries will be divided into separate dance heats. A separate panel of judges will judge each heat. Finalists from each heat will then dance their dances before a new panel of judges during the Saturday Evening program. Additionally, if there is a total score difference of five points or less between first place and subsequent placed dances in any division or heat, each finalist will demonstrate their dance before a different panel of judges during the Saturday Evening program after which the winning dance will be selected.
ORIGINAL CHOREOGRAPHY SCORING – 150 POINTS POSSIBLE
Judges will use the following criteria to evaluate each dance entered in competition:
1) Originality, uniqueness of dance movements and steps: 0-15 points
2) Flow of dance and combination of dance steps: 0-30 points
3) Compatibility of dance steps with music: 0-30 points
4) Artistic interpretation of the dance music selected: 0-25 points
5) Step description – accuracy, terminology, comprehensive value: 0-10 points
6) Correct identification of dance level and category as written on step sheet: 0-10 points
7) Ability to demonstrate and describe dance steps with clarity and accuracy: 0-30 points
